Maeng Da Kratom: The Rolls Royce of Kratom
If you’re one of those people who likes to have the best of everything, then Maeng Da kratom is the strain for you. Translating to “pimp grade,” this Thai strain of kratom is known as one of the most potent strains in existence with a powerful energizing aroma that is felt quickly and lasts for a good amount of time. In this article, we’ll help you figure out “what is Maeng Da kratom” and whether this strain could be right for you!
A Matter of Survival
To understand what Maeng Da kratom is, one must also understand the complicated political background surrounding Thailand. The 1930s and 1940s saw a difficult time for Thailand. Under the rule of Luang Phibunsongkhram, many authoritarian laws were approved that gave the Thai government extensive powers of arrest and full censorship of the press. In these dark years, many field laborers in Thailand would be forced to work 18-hour days, seven days a week.

Under these harsh conditions, workers chewed on kratom leaves to help them get through the day—providing them with much-needed energy to fight against the fatigue of labor and provide relief for their aching, overworked muscles. As kratom (including Maeng Da kratom) grew freely around the country, workers had easy access to this natural ethnobotanical.
The 1943 Kratom Act
Prior to the Kratom Act of 1943, many working class locals utilized kratom as an all-natural traditional solution for relaxing and coping with the physically challenging conditions of farm and industrial labor. During this same time, however, the Thai government was also making large amounts of money off taxing the opiate trade. When the Thai government realized that kratom—including Maeng Da kratom—had become a sustainable solution for the working class, they decided that it was time to put an end to it.
Illegal but Still Used
Enter the Kratom Act 2486. On August 3, 1943, it was declared that it was illegal to cultivate or possess kratom—a plant that had been used in traditional Thai culture and medicine for thousands of years. Fortunately, kratom (including Maeng Da) continued to grow in the Thai wild and the ban was never enforced strictly enough to stamp out the important place that kratom has (and continues to have) in Thai culture today.
What is the Future of Maeng Da Kratom?
In more recent years, there have been moves to legalize kratom in Thailand. In December of 2018, for example, Thailand’s National Narcotics Control Committee legalized the use of kratom for medicinal and research purposes.
What does all of this mean for Thai strains of kratom and Maeng Da specifically? As long as recreational kratom remains “illegal” in Thailand, Maeng Da and Thai’s other most popular strains of kratom must be grown in Indonesia and exported from there. Indonesia has the most favorable laws for the cultivation and export of kratom of all Southeast Asia. As such, strains once local to Thailand have found their way there for cultivation and exportation.
Maeng Da kratom has continued to evolve in its new Indonesian setting. While the effects of this modified strain are still said to be energizing, the Indonesian variety has a lower cost and gives users a slightly different experience to the original Thai Maeng Da kratom.
